Netflix made a film about medieval archaeology... sort of.
From my imperfect understanding as a Medieval History Master's student. Not the most intersectional video by any means; please let me know how I can improve. This video is talking about #theDigNetflix, a Netflix film starring Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes and Lily James, about the finding of Sutton Hoo.

I absolutely enjoyed this video and sincerely hope you're well and still going strong!
i am now a high school senior and am looking into pursuing history as a career and both my father and mother are hesitant on the thought. part of that hesitence is they don't think i can make enough money to support myself and part of it is because i have gonna have to study a lot because of it (i am dyslexic so studying has never come easy for me). and i have been looking for other options but just the thought of perusing history makes me happy so i might just go with. also this video helped a lot and i might even show it to my parents so that they understand it a bit better.
4:43 Its to tell His Story meaning thte people who created it. Like most things it is a form of philosophy & most of it is made up or more like religious beliefs than it is actualy evidence based facts. Which typically get pushed aside & hidden in most of the time In order to tell a story that proves something that they want people to believe. Like the idea that all black people come from africa & where slaves for instance.
Lie for their own political interests. Literally nothing else and you know it

Thank you
I agree with how we tend to forget a lot of things that happened in the past the effect us in the future.
i dont know what career i wanna do
It makes me so so happy when I see people actually perusing history as a career as it’s not as cool as computer but it’s one of my favourite subjects and I want to be a “Historian” 🎀
I understand, Im in auxiliary sciences and archives, and its really hard. Since im coming from physics background
somebody remind me to come back in 5 years when I hopefully am finishing my degree and getting a job 🤞
3 years :'(
I like history
I can’t speak for other countries, but I think many videos may have other career options because actual jobs as a historian are scarce. I also ended up getting a masters in Defense and Strategic Studies and a grad certificate in Nuclear Weapons Effects, Policy, and Proliferation. It made me a better scholar, but also made me more marketable. I think this is actually where most U.S. history programs are lacking. They don’t really talk about historical skills outside of academia even though the jobs aren’t there. More emphasis could be placed on public history education, archivist positions, and other historical type jobs.
Guys, just do what you love, the rewards will come and do not rely on expectations as you can not control them
your a pretty historian ❤. . . . nice video
You're really cute
the most gorgeous ever
English accent and historian is like peanut butter and bread. Not all sandwiches are PB, but when it is PB...
Ophelia ~ How could someone so intelligent and articulate put forth such a wonderful video ...one that garnered over 32,000 views as of the two-year mark, and from which 2/5ths of those having watched it were so impressed they subscribed to your channel ...and then leave us bereft??? I can only assume that the RUclips algorithm, normally so ignorant, recognized your inherent worth and suggested your video to me by way of soliciting my comment, urging your return. 🥺 I hope you are well, happily graduated and situated in a fulfilling position, and amply rewarded for what I am sure will be substantial contributions to your field of study. You are so engaging and well spoken - and your enthusiasm is so thoroughly contagious- that I believe you merit a place on a wider stage. The Australian Lucy Worsley, if you will. 😊
Hi, thank you for the video. It was very helpful, even for someone already taking graduate classes and trying to narrow their focus. Do you know if there is a rough ratio of teaching to researching programs? I'm more interested in the latter and I'm wondering what my options will be. Thank you!
Ok. I’m going to say it: WE MISS YOU!! ❤❤❤ Hope all’s going swimmingly and your doing fabulously. If you do decide to return to RUclips know we’ll be truly ecstatic! Much love!
What happened to other videos of her? She was my favourite RUclipsr, I hope she's doing fine.
I am a continuous reader I am 41 years old now I am 42 in the 5th jun and I started being an avid reader again after being in a huge reading slump I started being an avid reader since 2020 due to covid, I have been interested in arts etc all through my life and I never took to the history subject when I was in hightschool, now since I read Kate moss crying city, and the burning chambers I have taken to historical fiction and the History subject, why one book can change one view on how you see the subject, now I am into reading history and historical fiction, all my year I liked to learn how people live or lived and how they thought, I guess I was always like an anthologist, and I was always fascinated by ancient Egypt, and collecting things, I guess I was always a bit like an archaeologist in a way so now I am interested in the subject History, I wish I did when I was younger I would not have been kicked out of History class for sleeping behind me books during my assignment.
I'm actually studying to become an Historian
I'm a huge history nerd and am currently attending high school. I'm also planning on studying ancient history and archaeology at university and honestly I really can't wait, cause I'm extremely passionate about history and find both of these sciences really fascinating. How much can we actually learn from people who lived hundred or even a few thousand of years ago! I just found out about your channel and I'm really glad I did, love to see someone who shares love for history❤
What a cute accent ❤❤ mmmeeeeoooww
This is the most remarkable insight ive ever had in my life. I feel like what I really want in life is the same thing you are after. However, I am from a completely different region with a different background and this has been a major problem in my life. Im 21 yrs old and live in Missouri. I also know no other academics like this stuff. The cultural pressure of trying to fit in here led me join the marines and waste the past 4 years of my life and now I've finally found a path I actually want to pursue. Our modern world sometimes can be insane but thank god for the internet and my provider, and my computer and this video and you and your appliances.
where are all your videos?
She took them down
@@iRosati It seems all her social media accounts have disappeared too, hope she's doing okay :(
great video, bravo!
Does the field have a leftist tilt
@Ophelia Vert Great video! You know in our heavily commercialized and modern world we have forgotten that while you can make money off of virtually everything: *Only commerce has money and profit as the end goal.* *Non commercial activities such as history does not have money as its end goal.* The end goal of history is to learn. And the end goal of learning is to acquire wisdom. What then does Wisdom teach us with Her doctrines? That we should hold to the good and abstain from evil. And what is the fruit of Wisdom? That we possess a clear conscience that we have not dealt evil and unjustly with others, having walked the Way of Truth.
@Ophelia Vert Wisdom has shown us through history what happens to those who do not learn from Her and those who do.
How much of an academics publication is supposition over documented facts? How many written accounts of historical events do we actually have from the medieval period? As you eloquently highlighted in this vlog, a vast amount of knowledge can be gained from the archaeologists who uncovered artefacts from our past, but surely there is limited data on the social dynamics from the Middle Ages. I’m not a historian, I have not spent much time studying history, but the medieval period of British history fascinates me. I’ve heard the term, “history is written by the victors”. Narratives about any subject can be spun to advance certain mindsets. This is no less true today, particularly the recent push for progressive values and the slow eradication or demonisation of certain British historical figures. Seems to me, a lot of modern day historians want to view our history through the same moral lens we benefit from today, without considering the barbaric nature our ancestors required in order to survive those harsh times. So how true are the claims made by about our history?
I am from India. What is the scope indian history in foregin country. I have completed master degree in indian ancient history art and culture
Historians generally rewrite history to fit in with modern propaganda and ideology. That and grave robbing.
I agree we are here now because of our ancestors and to learn of them is learning about ourselves, after thousands of years we still continue to make the biggest mess of things. Such as discrimination of any kind, how have we not learned from the past? I do believe genes are passed down even from 1600’s in my family on both sides we have been around each other for centuries.
History is everything
Finally!
Hey, why did you delete all your language learning videos? It’s a shame because I love those videos, however I respect your choice !
It’s so much fun 🤩 history I’m Obsessed 😍 and I love 💗 learning more facts about history it’s the best and it’s a dream of mine to become a historian
Anyone on here thinking of going to graduate school for history must understand that the job market for history PhDs is incredibly tight, and has been so since the 1970's. It is a long and difficult road to take. And a master's degree in history is neither here nor there, IMHO. A master's degree in history used to be a good credential for a job at a community college or other two year college, but increasingly PhDs have been taking those jobs because there is such a glut of them. I love history. My undergraduate degree is in history. But I didn't see much a career in the field for myself.
